Description: This is the second label from Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, a prestigious wine estate dating back to the 14th century. The first vines were planted in 1365 on the gravelly soil that gives these wine their distinct flavor profile that is considered the blueprint for Pessac-Leognan (Graves) red wines. The Cathiard family purchased the estate in 1990 after a successful career as Olympic skiers. They have done everything right since, modernizing the facilities and transitioned into organic and biodynamic farming. Dense deep dark purple color. Long legs with seductive tears. Nose of cream, vanilla, butterscotch, mocha chocolate, sweet pipe tobacco, and cedar notes. Palate: silky sweet tannins, medium to full body, dark blackberry and loamy with a dry, structured mid palate of black cherries, currant and a subtle spice finish. An amazingly complex wine. With the dry finish and solid tannins. It seems this wine will develop in bottle and the fruit will mellow leaving an exquisite Bordeaux. Potential for mid-term aging but the wine drinks well now.
