Description: This is the second label from Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, a prestigious wine estate dating back to the 14th century. The first vines were planted in 1365 on the gravelly soil that gives the wine its distinct flavor profile that is considered the blueprint for Pessac-Leognan (Graves) red wines. The Cathiard family purchased the estate in 1990 after a successful career as Olympic skiers. They have done everything right since, modernizing the facilities and transitioned into organic and biodynamic farming. The wine displays a beautiful crystal-clear crimson color. The nose is tight but aromas of gravelly-loam and dried red currants come to mind. The palate has excellent acid/alcohol balance with fine, polished tannins. Gravel and wood root combined with roasted herbs. Red currants, tobacco leaf and a touch of cocoa engulfs the palate. This wine will continue to develop in bottle and the fruit will reveal itself into an exquisite Bordeaux. Potential for mid-term aging but the wine drinks well now.
