Description: Founded in 1761, Borgogno is the oldest continuously operating winery in Barolo. A major revitalization came in the 1920's when Cesare Borgogno took the reins, expanded production, and started shipping bottles far beyond the Italian border. Cesare also began hoarding Barolo—in the best way. Half of every vintage was tucked away in a massive cellar vault, only to be unleashed two decades later. The new owners in 2008 brought new energy with an organic conversion and a bold return to fermenting in cement vats, just like the good old days. The entire operation still runs from a subterranean cellar in the heart of the village of Barolo .
The estate now counts 39 hectares, including Cannubi, region’s crown jewel. Cannubi is perhaps the most famous hill in Italy, the most celebrated and prestigious vineyard with the Barolo designation. Historically, it is the oldest Italian Grand Cru, given the recognition in 1752. Everything here is perfect: the altitude, exposure, the soils, the layout, and microclimate results in a Barolo at the top of the designation.
