Description: Overholt is recognized as the oldest continuously maintained brand of American whiskey. Currently made in Kentucky but modeled after the 1810 recipe used by Abraham Overholt in the Monongahela Valley of Pennsylvania. In 1810 Abraham Overholt took over management of the family distillery and officially establishes the commercial enterprise, producing a regional style known as Old Monongahela rye whiskey. Overholt was, at one time, one of the most respected and highly regarded whiskeys in the United States, said to have once been the preferred choice of notables like Ulysses S. Grant and John Henry “Doc” Holliday. It is the only American whiskey brand that retains undeniable ties to the “Old Monongahela” (muh-naang-guh-hee-luh) style of rye. Now that Rye Whiskey is making a resurgence in American bars and restaurants, the A. Overholt Monongahela mash being a high-rye is becoming super popular amongst rye drinkers.

American Rye Whiskey Definition: The rules of Straight Rye must be made with a grain mixture (known as a mash bill) that is a minimum of 51% Rye; aged a minimum of two years in charred new oak ( if it is older than 2 years, but younger than 4 years, it must contain an age statement reflecting the youngest bourbon in the bottle). Finally, "Straight" Rye must be bottled at a minimum of 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof) and contain no added coloring or flavoring.
