Description: 53 different land owners came together to create a cooperative called Bodegas Coviñas in 1965. Each of them hand farms many 2-4 hectares of 60-100 years old vines throughout the vast region. Select lots of older vines are located in the driest, highest and windiest regions of Requena and have been easily certified organic. Many of these ancient vines have never received any sprays/treatments or pesticides ever. Utiel Requena was crowned one of Spain’s first DOs in the 1930’s. Approximately 45 miles off the SE coast of the Mediterranean, within the region of Valenciana, the arid, harsh climate from the northwest welcomes the strong Mediterranean influence of warming wind. The high altitude sites in Requena (1000m) are dotted with poor, organic soils of river rock, clay and limestone, making it the perfect setting for pesticide-free farming practices.
The wine displays clean, pale-straw color. Aromas of starfruit, papaya, and green herb. On the palate, the wine has weight (medium-bodied) but still crisp and zesty with good high-tone acidity. Dried lemon verbena (lemon-drop) and soft mineral tone on the finish.
Food pairing: Asian food, fish, grilled sardines, mexican cuisine, lemon chicken, lemon-based sauces, etc.
